Diarrhea and prevention measures

Diarrhea is a condition in which watery stools are passed three or more times per day, with accompanying symptoms of vomiting, dehydration, and electrolyte disturbances. If not treated promptly, it can lead to death. 

What causes diarrhea?

There are many causes of diarrhea, including viruses and bacteria, the most dangerous is diarrhea caused by cholera. The disease is transmitted by the gastrointestinal tract through contaminated food and drinking water. The disease is closely related to environmental conditions, water, food safety and people's hygiene habits.

 

People at high risk of getting diarrhea: People who eat and drink and live close to people with diarrhea are more likely to get sick if they don't take preventive measures; People living in areas using unhygienic latrines, pour feces directly into sewers, ditches, ponds, lakes, rivers, streams...; Using contaminated water; Having unhygienic eating habits, or eating raw vegetables and undercooked seafood; Using fresh or untreated manure to ensure hygiene in cultivation; Residents in flooded areas and after flooding…

Symptoms of the disease

Some of the main symptoms of the disease are the symptoms of acute bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract: abdominal bloating, abdominal bloating; persistent diarrhea, many times, at first loose, then watery (in case of cholera: turbid stools like rice water); vomiting, vomiting food at first, then vomiting only clear or pale yellow water; people are tired, may have cramps, show dehydration from mild to severe such as thirst, dry skin, wrinkled, emaciated, sunken eyes, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, sometimes blood cannot be measured pressure, little or no urination, cold hands and feet… and can lead to death.

 

How to prevent diarrhea

Diarrhea is contagious, dangerous complications but can be prevented from the very beginning. Some useful measures can be applied such as:

  • Enhance personal hygiene, environment and living space.
  • Ensuring food safety and hygiene, eating and drinking boiling water.
  • Protect water sources and use clean water.
  • Take proper handling measures when someone has acute diarrhea.
